If you spend any time on my website learning about gynecomastia, also known as “man boobs,” you will observe that most of the gynecomastia before and after photos on the site are patients 35 years and younger. Someone recently asked me about the gynecomastia surgery age range and if his age of 56 meant he wasn’t a candidate for treatment, even though he has lived with it his entire life.
The short answer is that there really is no age limit to treatment. We older folks, relative to the 35 year old’s at least, are ok to get treatment. One reason why those over 40 hadn't sought treatment earlier is that when they were younger, no one even talked about gynecomastia. It was not known as a treatable condition. Even in 2015, most people don’t know how to pronounce it, let alone know what it is and how it greatly it can affect those who have it.
One thing to keep in mind is that older folks may have other health conditions that could increase the risk of surgery and anesthesia. Also, the procedure can be technically more demanding for a surgeon because of the loss of skin elasticity that comes with age. From a psychological standpoint, however, older patients may be better adapted to treatment than younger men who are in the midst of their prime and are more sensitive to their Gynecomastia appearance. This is not to say that we older folk are not having fun or don’t care!
In the early days of my practice, most of the before and after photos I posted were of local residents from my hometown of Austin, Texas and Austin is very young. But now, almost 60% of my patients are of varying ages from Elsewhere, USA or from overseas.
My Virtual Consultation feature on my website makes it really easy for you to speak with me and receive my professional recommendation. Send me some pictures and a brief history and I will let you know what I think—plain and simple. You can do this from the comfort and privacy of your own home, on your own time when you are ready to explore your options. This is a HUGE opportunity for you to engage with a true expert and there are no downsides, except for potential disappointment if I don’t think you are a good candidate for us at the Austin Gynecomastia Center. If I can’t offer you treatment, it’s not personal — I just know how and when to prioritize safety, and sometimes it’s better to just say no.
My ninety-year-old mom always reminds me NEVER to discriminate based on age. And my mother is almost always right. I hope if you are over 35, and you have been suffering from gynecomastia, that you will consider treatment alternatives at the Austin Gynecomastia Center!
