Rest & Recovery for Optimal Healing

Timeline of recovery by Austin Gynecomastia Center

Whether you took the time to travel to Austin or finally took the time for your Gynecomastia surgery, it is important to rest and heal properly. Many of our patients say their surgery is life-changing and that they can not wait to live life on their terms. However, recovery from Gynecomastia surgery - male breast reduction or lift - varies with each patient, the severity of their case, and their body’s pain tolerance response. Typical recovery time from your surgery is about four to six weeks. Our Austin Gynecomastia Center recovery timeline offers an insight into what to expect for your recovery.

After gynecomastia surgery

It is vital to have a friend or family member assist you for the first 24 hours after your surgery.

You will also want to avoid trying to lift or carry heavy items - including your children. Two to three days after your surgery, you can expect pain, tenderness, and tightness in your chest. Your pain and discomfort can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication, such as Tylenol. You can expect to have some swelling for about three days; however, it is imperative to wear your compression garment and refrain from sleeping on your stomach until you are healed.

One week following gynecomastia surgery

Patients typically return to work after one week.

You may still be sore, but as long as your job is not strenuous, you should be able to return with any issues. You will continue to wear your compression garment under your clothes and continue sleeping on your back.

Two weeks recovery

After 14 days, you will begin feeling better and more like yourself. You still need to refrain from vigorous exercise, but at this point, you can start to sleep on your side and stomach. However, wearing your compression garment is still a must.

Four to Six weeks post-surgery

The swelling typically subsides within four to six weeks, and your final results are fully revealed.

However, swelling may remain for several months, so it is important to listen to your body. When the swelling goes down, you can return to your exercise routine that involves the chest and sleep in any position you desire.

Quick Tips to Speed Up Your Recovery

The best way to begin your recovery after surgery is to adhere to all of the post-operative instructions you received from Dr. Caridi and your surgical team.

Additional tips include

  • Wear your compression garment to reduce swelling and inflammation.
  • Limit exercise and strenuous activity until your doctor clears you.
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking for at least two weeks after your surgery. Smoking limits blood flow, and alcohol can dehydrate you.
  • Stay hydrated, but avoid drinking excessive amounts of water.

As your incisions heal, it will take some time for the scars to heal and fade. However, Dr. Caridi does everything possible to place your incisions in low visibility areas. If you are patient in your recovery period, let your body tell you when to resume activities like working out, and stick to your recovery plan, your patience will be rewarded with great results.
