For all you out there combing the Internet for information about gynecomastia, it’s important to know that you don’t need to feel a “rubbery” substance or have a painful lump behind the nipple in your chest to have gynecomastia. In fact, the vast majority of gynecomastia surgery patients don’t have male breast lumps or “nuggets” under their chest and have no pain.
Gynecomastia, by definition, is the appearance of a female like breast in a male, which is commonly referred to as “man boobs.” There is NO reference to the type of tissue, male breast lumps or how the tissue feels. EVERYONE who has the appearance of gynecomastia will have excess proliferation of gynecomastia tissue but the type varies in each case and has no bearing on how I treat the condition. This is simple FACT.
The normal male chest has a relatively thin layer of tissue that is uniform in thickness. Obese males will develop more chest fat and the layer becomes thicker for sure. Unfortunately, in most cases when these obese men lose weight their chest area doesn’t respond like the rest of the body. This is because the excess fatty tissue under the nipple often produces more estrogen and this makes for true gynecomastia tissue that does not respond to weight changes (or diet, pills, rubs, creams, lotions, potions, voodoo, etc.).
The “classic” appearance of a female like breast is caused by gynecomastia tissue growth that causes the male chest to form a round and projecting appearance often with “puffy nipples”. The appearance ranges from subtle to dramatic. Treatment is the same for all types and hormone evaluations aren’t generally needed. Hormones are the most common cause for the chest to not flatten after pubertal growth and of obesity in general.
Treatment with the VASERâ„¢ and tissue pull out technique has proven to be the “gold standard” at the AGC. Skin removal with scars across the chest is reserved for the worst of the worst cases only. Gynecomastia is a benign condition and the major problem arises from the fact that it plays with your mind. Because gynecomastia treatment is curative and the condition does not recur, life is really good!
