I’m often asked for a gynecomastia definition. Simple. Gynecomastia is the appearance of a female-like breast in a man. This is why the condition is derogatorily referred to as “man boobs.” There is confusion about what gynecomastia is and how to deal with it, but this confusion comes from misunderstandings, marketing, manipulation, and greed. In reality, it’s all very straightforward.
The #2 question we get after “what is gynecomastia” is “do I have gynecomastia?” If your chest looks fuller and rounder than the average man’s, you may have gynecomastia. If your chest can be better described as breasts, you most certainly have gynecomastia. It really doesn’t matter what’s below your skin. You don’t need to have “lumps and bumps” or anything else for that matter. The ideal male chest has an even layer of tissue on the chest while men with gynecomastia have more tissue than normal. The types of tissue you have will not affect how it will ultimately be treated.
We would love to believe that it gynecomastia is simply excess fatty tissue that will go away with weight loss, but this is not the case. If you have gynecomastia and you lose weight, not only will it not go away, it often looks worse because of the contrast between a leaner body and a chest that remains unchanged.
Another critical point to understand with gynecomastia is that there is no treatment to remove gynecomastia other than the surgical removal of the gynecomastia tissue. Once gynecomastia is established and present for months, it will not disappear with diet, weight loss or medications. Additionally, exercise will not get rid of gynecomastia. Trust me when I tell you this. I’m not known for telling my patients what they want to hear—only the facts will do! Know the truth and the truth shall set you free.
If you have the appearance of gynecomastia with or without clothing, the only way to treat it is to consult with an experienced and trusted Austin gynecomastia surgeon.
